I couldn't have been more surprised
What happens when a geek entrepreneur's consciousness becomes the intelligence of autonomous spacecraft?
For over a year, I saw the “Bobiverse” books show up on Amazon when searching for my next read. And for all that time, I pretty much ignored them.
I’d read the synopsis of the first book and quite frankly was put off by it. As the books continued to appear, I decided to give the first book in this series a go in a week in which I couldn’t settle on what to get.
Boy, I couldn’t have been more surprised by it. The first few pages gave me the impression that I might have been right about that one being a book I wouldn’t like, but soon enough, I was hooked.
I read (in this case, listened to) the first three books in quick succession. I enjoyed what might even be considered the world’s most extended monologue, as almost all characters in the books are variations of the original, Bob. I know, I know… sounds weird and perhaps not so interesting… but it is!
All this happened over a couple of years ago and recently the author, released the fourth book in this series, called Heaven’s River, and I was once again surprised by the twists and turns the story took and how much I liked it.
All in all, this series, which is known as the “Bobiverse,” is an excellent read. It breaks with most of what you could reasonably call “traditional” sci-fi storytelling by making us see the story from the first-person point of view of the, in time, many versions of “Bob” that come to exist.
Today’s Recommendation
As you can probably imagine from my opening comments, my recommendation for today is the first book of Dannis E. Taylor’s Bobiverse: We are legion (we are Bob).
This is an excellent book and the start of an outstanding series.
