Welcome to the Ruins!
From the Earth to the Galaxy, everything is in Ruins...
As I write this, I have just started to listen to Ruins of the Earth on Audible, narrated by the great RC Bray. This is the first book of the Ruins of the Earth series by my good friend Christopher Hopper and JN Chaney.
The combination of this story with RC Bray’s narration is explosive. If you are into audiobooks, this one has my most effusive recommendation. :-)
If you prefer to read your books, you are in luck as there are already three books out in this series, with a fourth due in April.
Ruins of the Earth
Even though it is a prequel to the Ruins of the Galaxy series by the same author, Ruins of the Earth has a very different feel. It is set in the very-near-future, and thus the authors have taken great care to ensure that the story feels real, despite all the incredible turns it takes through multiple universes.
The characters in these stories should be very relatable, especially to those with a military background. They seem to be normal people or as normal as possible in a world facing an alien invasion.
Ruins of the Galaxy
Thousands of years removed from the events depicted in its prequel series, Ruins of the Galaxy is very detached from our reality and makes no effort to reflect present-day habits and culture.
The funny thing about these books is that I read them as they were written, and I always had this feeling that they were too short, but they weren’t. In fact, if anything, they were a bit longer than the average science fiction books in series. I would get engrossed in the story, and then suddenly, the book would be over. To me, this is that mark of a good series: you don’t think you’ve had enough when you get to the end of one of the books.
Today’s recommendation
Today’s recommendation can be no other than Ruins of the Earth, book 1 in the series.
This book introduces the main characters in this series and does so through situations that I can readily see being turned into a movie.
The World Builders
If you are into Science Fiction and Fantasy worldbuilding, check out the first post of The World Builders, a sister publication. I will be diving deeper into different aspects of worldbuilding in science fiction (and some fantasy) books.
